Boys going to bed

The guinea fowl roost in the pear tree - now that they have a mcmansion we are trying to devise ways of getting them out of the tree.  Don't like our chances.

Wonders of the world

Have recently acquired a macro lens add-on and a whole new world is there for my delectation.  These plants are no larger than a 10 cent piece.  Can you see the hairs on the wood ear fungus? I swear they weren't there before the photo was taken!

Before and after

Bob the builder is determined to ensure the guinea boys have the best accommodation.  First he built the Bali Resort, and now the McMansion is going up over the top. Eventually the resort will be removed, once the birdbrains twig that they haven't been rendered homeless.

Today's goodies

Do you like fava beans (broad beans)? I'm v much on the fence about them. Great as a dip, vile if not peeled well. Have come across this article by guru Harold McGee which might help swing me onto the good side.  He recommends adding a little baking soda to the boiling water when cooking the broadbeans - the little treasures shuck themselves!

And how amazing is this project? An interactive digital woodland at the Tate Modern. Hope they don't mind the theft of their image.

Made tahini and almond biscuits based on a recent recipe on David Lebovitz's site. Used a ma'amoul mold - sort of worked. Ma'amoul are Middle Eastern biscuits filled with dates, walnuts, pistachio - mine weren't. We'll get to that eventually!

Sunshine and spiders

Today is the first dry day in ages and ages, it's almost like spring.  We've been out digging up the strawberry bed in preparation for planting new stock.  The guinea boys have helped - they love it when earth is being turned. Discovered that Engelbird knows the word "spider" - I'd dig and turn, call out spider and point and Engelbird would come in for the kill.  Who'd have thought they understood English!

Click on the image to get nice big pics.  Sorry about turning it into a slide show, but couldn't decide which pics to upload - so uploaded them all.

Family entertainment

It was the first day of summer, very hot and massive (musical) celebrations were happening all over France.  We had 10 hours until our plane left Marseille.  The airport is minimal, but it's clean and cool.  We'd been warned about the huge crowds in town - pickpockets, problems with getting around on public transport, road closures .... so we elected to camp at the airport.  I know - poor sense of adventure.

But the time gave us plenty of opportunity to survey the locals.  And that was interesting.

The baby in the pram, the baby's parents, the grandparents and an extremely well behaved dog spent several hours at the airport.  Chatting, eating and playing cards.  Then they up and left to go home.  And they weren't the only people observed doing that.

Hadn't thought of heading out to an airport for light entertainment.
