Six stages of blueberry ripening

We have the best ever blueberry crop to harvest this year.

The image gives you an idea why blueberries are perceived to be an expensive buy - although it has been pointed out to me that on a weight:cost ratio they are a lot cheaper than most junk food!.

Blueberries generally grow in bunches, similar in some ways to grapes.   Blueberries do not ripen after they have been picked - so they need to picked ripe.  A bunch of blueberries does not ripen at the same rate - these pernickety little fruit like to ripen at their own pace. Consequently, the lucky harvester spends a lot of time rummaging around a bush looking for the completely blue fruit.
